Shiite News: Established in 1994 by Molana Rashid Ahmad Jalhandhri, Jamia Al-Rasheed Karachi soon became a central hub of the Deobandi jihadi network in Pakistan.
The seminary’s founder and its key figures played an active role in Afghan Taliban formation and militant recruitment during the Afghan jihad.
The seminary was closely linked to Harkat-ul-Jihad al-Islami, with direct connections to Mullah Omar and Taliban leadership.
Later, it launched Weekly Zarb-e-Momin, which acted as a propaganda mouthpiece for the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
The publication reportedly had a circulation of up to half a million and was widely distributed across Pakistan’s provinces and tribal regions.
Investigative sources revealed that many of its writers, including the famed “Yaser Khan,” were Taliban field commanders using pen names.
Reports also uncovered close historical ties between Pakistan’s security establishment and the seminary’s leadership.
Despite past tensions, Jamia Al-Rasheed’s relations with the state have improved, and the institution now operates Ghazali University under a Sindh Assembly charter, with several of its scholars serving on Islamic finance boards in commercial banks.
