Creation of New Lebanese Government Suffers from Ongoing Procrastination

The recent political sources in Lebanon pointed out that cabinet formation file has not witnessed any advance amid reports about a concession made by President Michel Aoun.

Media reports indicated that the premier-designate Saad Hariri rejected a proposal conveyed by General Security Chief, General Abbas Ibrahim, and based on granting 5 out of 18 seats to the president plus the interior affairs portfolio.

According to this proposal, President Aoun would not have a veto share in the new government, which has been dismissed by Hariri who reiterated his rejection of granting any single party one-third of the government.

However, the PM-designate announced, in a statement, that he did not receive any proposal, stressing, in response to another statement, issued by MP Gebran Bassil, that President Aoun must not have a fie-seat share in the new government if Bassil-led parliamenary bloc does not grant it confidence.

In conclusion, the governmental file has not witnessed any progress despite the ongoing economic crisis, knowing that Hariri was tasked to form the new cabinet on October 22, 2020.
