Mortar attack kills 7 MKO members in Iraq’s Camp Liberty

mko forceAt least seven members of the terrorist Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization (MKO) have been killed and more than 50 others wounded in a mortar attack on Camp Liberty near the Iraqi capital, Baghdad,

A number of Iraqi policemen were also injured in the attack that took place early Saturday.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

Members of the MKO terrorist group are being transferred from Camp New Iraq, formerly known as Camp Ashraf is situated about 120 kilometers (74 miles) west of the border with Iran, to the Camp Liberty near Baghdad Airport.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees said that Camp Liberty should be used as a transit center for the MKO members to other countries.

Head of the Security Committee of Iraq’s Diyala Province Meysam al-Tamimisaid said earlier in February that the MKO had turned its Camp Ashraf into a base for training al-Qaeda operatives who carry out terrorist attacks against the Iraqi nation.

He added that a large amount of money and weapons was also funneled through Camp Ashraf to al-Qaeda and Salafist extremist groups to help them target Iraqis in acts of terror.

The MKO fled to Iraq in 1986, where it enjoyed the support of Iraq’s executed dictator Saddam Hussein, and set up its camp near the Iranian border.

The US-backed group is also known to have cooperated with Saddam Hussein in suppressing the 1991 uprisings in southern Iraq and carrying out the massacre of Iraqi Kurds.

The MKO has carried out numerous acts of violence against Iranian civilians and government officials.

Last year, some 100 MKO members separated from the group and are now living in Iran.
