Saudi Crimes in Yemen Tarnish Image of Islam:Ayatollah Movahedi Kermani

A senior Iranian cleric on Friday strongly condemned the crimes committed by Saudi regime against the innocent people of Yemen, saying that the Saudi crimes have undermined the image of Islam in the world.

Addressing a large gathering of worshippers here in Tehran on Friday, Tehran’s Provisional Friday Prayers Leader Ayatollah Mohammad Ali Movahedi Kermani denounced Riyadh’s military attacks on Yemen, and said Al Saud regime has tarnished the image of Islam in the world with such measures.

He pointed to Tehran’s efforts to dispatch humanitarian aid to the war-hit people of Yemen, and noted, “Amid the crimes being committed against the people of Yemen, the true image of Islam has been revealed by the Islamic Iran.”

In similar remarks on Wednesday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei described the Saudi regime’s excuse for waging a war on Yemen as “silly”, saying that Riyadh made a big mistake in the Arabian Peninsula country.

The Leader referred to the ongoing events in Yemen as regrettable, and said, “The Saudis have made a big mistake in Yemen and the crimes they have committed will definitely backfire on them.”

Elsewhere in his Friday remarks, Ayatollah Movahedi Kermani leveled strong criticism at the countries that supported Riyadh in the war, stressing that during the Saudi aggression on Yemen, these countries were disgraced by their support for the Saudi regime.

The international community that claims to be advocate of human rights and democracy was also disgraced in the event, he added. The senior cleric also highlighted the significance of efforts to resolve the ongoing crisis in Yemen, saying that the issue of Yemen is important not only to the Islamic world, but also to the entire humanity.

For weeks, Yemen’s defenseless people have been under attacks by a coalition led by Riyadh.

On March 26, Saudi Arabia and some of its Arab allies began to launch deadly air strikes against the Houthi Ansarullah movement in an attempt to restore power to the fugitive former President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi, a close ally of Riyadh.

The Saudi-led coalition announced on April 21 that its military operation “Decisive Storm” has ended, but hours later, air strikes and ground fighting resumed.
Earlier on May 7, Saudi Arabia announced a five-day ‘humanitarian’ ceasefire, to which Ansarullah movement and the Yemeni army consented. The ceasefire has started on Tuesday.
