Bahrain: Human Rights Organization Demands End to Restrictions on Shiite Mourning Rituals

Shiite News: The Bahrain Human Rights Society has called on the Bahraini government to immediately lift all restrictions imposed on Shiite religious observances and mourning processions, and to allow citizens to freely practice their religious ceremonies in accordance with the constitution and international law.

In its statement, the organization condemned the closure or cancellation of around 50 mourning centers, Hussainiyas, and religious associations, saying that such measures violate international agreements signed by Bahrain, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and the Arab Charter on Human Rights.

The statement said that restrictions on Arbaeen pilgrimages, the arrests of people participating in peaceful demonstrations, and the detention of Shiite clerics were also part of what it described as a systematic policy.

The organization also criticized the Jaafari Endowments institution and called for security restrictions on Hussainiyas and religious institutions to be lifted, as well as an end to discrimination on the basis of religion.
