Al-Sharaa: No Intention of Military Intervention in Lebanon, Syria Seeks to Avoid Confrontation With Israel

Shiite News: Ahmad al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani, the leader of the Syrian administration, said his government has no intention of undertaking any military intervention in Lebanon and will seek to avoid direct confrontation with Israel.

According to details, in an interview with Al Jazeera, al-Sharaa said Syria is working with the Lebanese government on solutions that could help move Lebanon out of its current crisis and toward greater stability. He stated that Lebanon’s challenges are not solely security-related but require a comprehensive political solution.

He added that any instability in Lebanon would directly affect Syria. For that reason, Damascus supports the principle that decisions regarding weapons, war, and peace should rest exclusively with the Lebanese state. He also expressed concern over the potential expansion of regional conflict.

Speaking about Israel, al-Sharaa said Syria wishes to avoid any confrontation with Israel because, under the current circumstances, doing so is in the country’s best interests.

He further revealed that, with the participation of several other countries, work is underway on a security agreement with Israel. He said that if the agreement succeeds, it could pave the way for comprehensive peace without Syria relinquishing its claim to the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

Al-Sharaa also said that lifting economic sanctions alone would not be sufficient unless Syria is removed from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Commenting on the implementation of an agreement with Kurdish groups, he described the process as progressing slowly but said the government remains optimistic about its success. He added that a special committee has been established, in accordance with international standards and with the assistance of experienced countries, to investigate the issue of missing persons.

Al-Sharaa also noted that relations with Iraq have continued to improve and confirmed that negotiations with Russia regarding the future of its military bases in Syria are still ongoing.
