Asif Ali Zardari, former president of Pakistan who now heads PPP Parliamentarians has defended rival party’s government decision to send troops to Saudi Arabia, contradicting his party’s senators in doing so.

“I cannot oppose the decision because I cannot let down the custodian of the Holy Kaaba,” he said at a press conference in Islamabad. He said that 1,600 soldiers could not win a war, they could only train people. It is also relevant to add here that Sunni religious parties’ leaders have turned down the Saudi war on Yemen and made it clear that Kaaba or Medina are not under threat but Zardari seems to flattering Saudi monarchy in a bid to woo their support for returning to power.
Zardari’s stance over the issue has surprised many because Senator Farhatullah Babar of his party had opposed the government decision to send troops to Saudi Arabia and Senate Chairman Raza Rabbani who also opposed government decision, hails from Zardari’s party.
Zardari also lauded Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa’s initiative to fence the Pak-Afghan border and hoped that relations with Afghanistan would improve in future.
