MWM to approach judiciary for rescheduling of the LB polls by February 2014
Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafari, Secretary General of Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen, has announced his MWM will file Constitutional petition in the court to seek rescheduling of the local councils elections by February 2013.
“Alongside countrywide campaign against the local councils elections according to present schedule, the apex court will be asked for the rescheduling e in view of participation of Muslims in azadari and Eid Milad ul Nabi (PBUH) during first three months of Islamic calendar,†he said speaking at a press conference here.
He also asked the Supreme Court, Election Commission and the federal and provincial governments to reconsider the schedule saying that the purpose of the local councils’ elections was to ensure participation of people in the power at grass root level.
But, he added, holding elections during Moharram, Safar and Rabi ul Awwal would not achieve this goal.
“A vast majority of Pakistanis observe azadari and celebrate Eid Milad ul Nabi Peace Be upon Him in a befitting manner. They prefer religious traditions and rituals during first three months of Islamic calendar. Hence, lack of the majority’s participation in these elections will shatter credibility of the elections,†he said.
Allama Jafari said that on the other hand, Government has made clear that they could not make required arrangements for the LB polls. He cited the Parliament too demanded rescheduling. Therefore, he reiterated his demand that keeping in view all the aspects, the Supreme Court should review its previous order.
He proposed that the local councils’ elections should be held in February 2014, Rabi us Sani. He said that Muslim voters of Pakistan huge turnout of the voters would be mad possible in that month as compared to the first three months of Islamic calendar. He said that the MWM was in favour of the local councils’ elections and won the case against party-less elections in Punjab.
