NAP moving slowly against terrorists and financial supporters of religious institutions: Meeting

The government has been told that objectives of the NAP, implemented to eradicate terrorism, could not be completely achieved due to some issues. This was said in a high officials’ meeting held to discuss the progress of NAP.

It should be remembered that the NAP was implemented in the country with mutual consent of all political parties after the last year’s attack on APS Peshawar that killed more than 145 children.

The meeting held yesterday was presided over by the PM Nawaz Sharif and Federal finance minister Ishaq Dar, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar, PM’s special advisor for foreign affairs Sartaj Aziz, Advisor for National Security Nasir Janjua, the COAS General Raheel Sharif, Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Zubair Hayat and other senior civil and military officials were also present.

In a detailed statement issued from the PM House it was said that issues of National security and different stages of the NAP were discussed in the meeting. Government sources said that the areas of the NAP which have been moving slowly were discussed during the meeting.

The aspects of the NAP which were declared unsatisfactory included action against the financial support of terrorists, madaaris, foreign aid of banned and sectarian organizations, hate speeches and reforms in religious institutions (madaaris).

The participants of the meeting were also told that there are also difficulties, at provincial level, in cooperation of military and civilian officials. Sources told that participants expressed their concerns over difficulties in permanently solving these issues. Despite the fact that these issues have been highlighted several times, the government is still trying to overcome them.

The recent wave of sectarianism in the country was also discussed in detail during the meeting.

With regard to a question about achievements of the NAP sources told that Operation Zarb e Azb and other operations carried out on secret intelligence have unfortunately failed to provide results in other 20 point agenda of the NAP.
