Pro-Taliban Musharraf changes colour saying recognizing Taliban govt was blunder

Former military ruler General (retd.) Pervez Musharraf who staunchly supported Taliban government now says that recognition of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was a blunder on part of Pakistan. He betrayed Taliban after U.S. changed its Taliban policy after 9/11 attacks.

He blamed the West and United States for the birth of Taliban’s key financier Al-Qaeda and leaving Pakistan high and dry after the Soviet withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Speaking at the Youth Parliament Convention here, he said Pakistan suffered due to wrong policies of the US as the country had to fight on two fronts simultaneously in 1979, which led to an increase in the size of the armed forces. It is also relevant to add here that in 1979, there was no tension on borders but Pakistani military dictator General Zia chose to fight a proxy war on behalf of the U.S.-led West against the then U.S.S.R. forces in Afghanistan.
Musharraf said efforts were made to destabilize Pakistan right from 50s and 60s era.
“Some say Taliban are our children and we created them… but it’s not true,” said the former president. Musharraf himself had said so in the past.
He said (so-called) Mujahideen were introduced to fight against the Soviet Union in 1979 and subsequently the Soviets were defeated and evacuated Afghanistan in 1989.
Musharraf regretted that Afghan “Mujahideen” were not looked after following their ‘utilization’ against the Soviets. He said Taliban who were fighting in Afghanistan were ethnic Pakhtuns and that identity was given to them by Pakistan.
He, however, admitted that recognizing the Taliban regime in Afghanistan was a blunder on Pakistan’s part.
