Gazans hold demos to slam crimes against prisoners

Gaza rally-HaniyaPeople in the besieged Gaza Strip have held protest rallies to denounce Israeli crimes against Palestinian prisoners, Press TV reports.

Hundreds of Gazans along with a number of senior figures from the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, including Prime Minister Ismail Haniya, took part in the demonstrations on Friday.

The reconciliation between Hamas and the Palestinian Fatah movement is uniting the prisoners in the Israeli prisons, Haniya said.

Friday prayers leaders across Gaza called on Muslims to set the prisoners’ case as a priority, keeping in mind the suffering of those imprisoned in Israeli jails.

“Today, Gazans are demonstrating to prove to the world that the prisoners’ case is a top priority,” Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri said.

“Our enemy has no mercy, but we will continue to demand every piece of our land. Freeing the prisoners is the first step of freeing the al-Aqsa Mosque. The resistance option shall not fall down and the freedom of our heroes in the Israeli prisons shall not be ignored,” a senior cleric in Gaza said.

The protesters expressed solidarity with Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails under administrative detention.

Administrative detention is a sort of imprisonment without trial or charge that allows Israel to incarcerate Palestinians for up to six months. The detention order can be renewed for indefinite periods.

According to the Palestinian Prisoners Society (PPS), 120 Palestinian inmates began an open-ended hunger strike on April 24, demanding an end to their illegal detention.

Demonstrators called on human rights organizations to increase their visits to the prisoners and to help the families of those under administrative detention.

Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails have been subject to human rights violations such as the use of torture during interrogation by prison authorities. Human rights groups often criticize Israeli prison authorities for rampant rights abuses in jails and mysterious deaths of inmates in custody.
