Bombings, attacks kill 6 Iraqi soldiers
Security and medical sources say six military officials, including a colonel and a lieutenant, have been killed in a series of bombings and gun attacks targeting the Iraqi army forces in the capital, Baghdad, and the town of al-Nibaie.
An Iraqi army captain, speaking on condition of anonymity, said four Iraqi soldiers were killed and three wounded in an ambush of a convoy carrying a regiment commander in al-Nibaie, situated 45 kilometers (30 miles) north of the capital Baghdad, on Tuesday.
The captain added that the three-vehicle convoy had initially escaped multiple roadside bombs, and subsequently came under attack by gunmen.
An Iraqi army colonel said that the regiment commander onboard the convoy was among the casualties.
In another attack, gunmen killed two Iraqi army soldiers, including a lieutenant, in a drive-by shooting in Baghdad.
The assailants, who were armed with silenced pistol and driving in two cars, opened fire on a military pick-up truck in Baghdad’s northern neighborhood of Waziriyah, killing the pair.
