23 Shia Muslims Martyr in Car Bombs in Baghdad

bomb blastIraqi security and medical sources say three car bombings have killed 23 Shia Muslims and injured dozens more during mourning ceremonies in Baghdad.

The deadliest attack occurred on Tuesday in the Shuala district, where a car bomb parked outside a place of worship exploded as people were leaving the building, killing nine, Reuters reported.

“I saw lots of blood on the ground,” policeman Hashem Abbas, who witnessed the blast, said. He added that shoes and torn clothing were scattered around the area.

Two other car bombings — one in the Graiat district and the other in the Hurriyah district — killed seven people each.

The attacks came two days after the Day of Ashura — the tenth day of the Islamic lunar month of Muharram — which is the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (PBUH), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Ashura, which occurred on Sunday, November 25 this year, is the anniversary of the day in 680 CE when thousands of forces loyal to the despotic Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Muawiyah martyred Imam Hussein (PBUH) and his 72 companions in Karbala, Iraq.

Hundreds of thousands of people flood Karbala for the Ashura religious rituals every year.
