A massive bomb attacked has killed at least 44 people in the northern Syrian town of Qamishli, state media say.

At least 140 people were also injured when a terrorist in a vehicle laden with explosives blew himself up in a western neighborhood of the city on Wednesday, the official SANA news agency said.

The Takfiri terrorist group of Daesh claimed responsibility for the attack which was initially described as a double bombing.

The area targeted houses where local Kurdish officials live. Qamishli, on the border with Turkey, is dominated by Syrian Kurds.

According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the explosions targeted a local police station and the headquarters of the local administration for the Hasaka province.
