Pakistan Takes Strong Stand in UN in Support of Iran
Shiite News: Pakistan has issued a warning that reimposing United Nations sanctions on Iran could worsen the situation and potentially lead to new conflicts in the region.
In his statement following the vote on UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015) and the nuclear deal, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, affirmed that Islamabad’s position is clear: all issues related to Iran’s nuclear program should only be addressed through peaceful means, dialogue, and cooperation.
He stated that re-enforcing sanctions in the current circumstances would only further harden the positions of all parties involved, making a diplomatic solution even more difficult to achieve. According to the Pakistani representative, the current situation demands increased diplomacy and dialogue.
Ambassador Ahmad emphasized the positive progress made with the recent agreement between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which saw the resumption of inspections and verification activities. He argued that this approach should be continued to rebuild mutual trust.
He also highlighted that, in Pakistan’s view, the nuclear agreement had been a model for addressing concerns and clarifying responsibilities but lamented that its implementation had been affected, leading to new conflicts and suspicions.
As a neighboring country and a friend of Iran, Pakistan’s envoy emphasized that his country could not support any actions that would further destabilize the region, which is already plagued by multiple crises. The Middle East, he noted, cannot afford more tension.
Ambassador Ahmad concluded by stating that there is still an opportunity for peaceful resolution through cooperation and political insight, underscoring that diplomacy cannot coexist with coercion.
