Can this ocean carbon plant help to save the world?

A startup in west Singapore is building a plant to turn carbon dioxide into seashell material and green hydrogen, according to CNN.

The cluster of buildings in Tuas will become the largest ocean-based carbon dioxide removal plant when it is finished later this year.

The idea is that the plant will draw water from the ocean, zap it with an electric current, and run air through it to create a series of chemical reactions to capture and store carbon dioxide as minerals that can be released back into the ocean or used on land.

It’s a good idea for dealing with the climate crisis, which is causing extreme weather. We are still far from stopping global heating. Many scientists say we must also remove the carbon pollution we have already put into the atmosphere.

This Singapore plant is one example of a new project that uses the ocean to help fight climate change. Other projects include putting iron particles in the ocean to help phytoplankton absorb CO2, sinking seaweed to lock up carbon, and spraying particles into marine clouds to reflect the sun’s energy.
