One thousand US troops illegally stay in Afghanistan because U.S. administration has notified presence of only 2500 of 3200 military personnel in that country.

According to The New York Times, the U.S. currently has 3,500 troops in Afghanistan.

It noted 1,000 more than the declared total of 2,500.

The NYT further noted the additional number adds another layer of complexity to the swirling debate at the White House over whether to stick with the deadline.

Specially, the US-Taliban peace deal required complete US troops pullout by May 1 deadline.

However, the NYT report took 1,000 as a small number compared to the roughly 100,000 deployed in Afghanistan at the height of the war.

Meanwhile, scope of the US presence has become a contentious issue in Afghanistan — where the Taliban want them out.

However, the U.S. claims Afghan government’s beleaguered security forces rely on US air support.

Factually speaking, Washington D.C. itself want no US withdrawal.

The report specially pointed out that members of Congress had repeatedly called for an increase in troops if the U.S. stays past the withdrawal date.

According to a senior US official, the additional force included Joint Special Operations Command units, some of them elite Army Rangers, who work under both the Pentagon and the CIA during Afghanistan related assignment.

Although Afghans and people of the neighbouring countries condemn illegal U.S. military presence, the NYT reported having more troops in a country than the Defence Department officially acknowledges remains a common practice.

Moreover, it said that from Syria to Yemen to Mali, the United States often details military troops to the CIA or other agencies.

Besides, the U.S. declares that information “classified” and refuses to publicly acknowledge their presence.

As per NYT report, the Obama administration used similar sleights of hand under the bland, bureaucratic term ‘force management levels.’

That resulted in more troops in war zones with little public oversight.

Meanwhile, US forces in Afghanistan stay stationed at roughly a dozen bases and consist mostly of Special Operations troops.

According to the U.S. officials, they advise Afghan units at the headquarters level, as well as flight and support crews for aircraft.

In southern Afghanistan, US jets fly overhead almost nightly.

Since this time last year, US troop numbers in Afghanistan have reduced from 12,000 to the current number.
