Saudi-backed terrorists may target West: Analyst

Untitled-2A political analyst says Saudi-backed foreign extremists operating in Syria may upon their return perpetrate “terrorist actions” in their home countries in Europe and the United States, Press TV reports.

In a Wednesday interview with Press TV, Webster Griffin Tarpley, a US-based author and historian, slammed Saudi Arabia’s “tremendous” support for “extremely violent” militants fighting against the Syrian government.

He also pointed to recent reports about an increase in the number of European militants joining the Saudi-sponsored fight against Damascus, saying the terrorist agents “may come back and attempt to start terrorist actions in Europe and the United States.”

According to a report published by the Associated Press on December 3, the number of European residents who have entered into operations against the Syrian government has risen in the past six months.

The 11 western European countries with the largest contingents in Syria are estimated to have around 1,200 to 1,700 people among the militants in the crisis-hit country, the report said.

Tarpley further argued that Riyadh unleashes terrorists into Syria and continues to supply “more and more modern weapons” to al-Qaeda-affiliated groups out of anger at Washington’s refusal to launch a “regional” war against the Arab country to overthrow the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Saudi Arabia has been the main supplier of weapons and funds to foreign-backed militants fighting against the Syrian government since the outbreak of violence in the country in March 2011.

On Thursday, Syria’s ambassador to the UN Bashar al-Ja’afari said many Saudi criminals, who have been either sentenced to death or life in prison, were released to join the militant groups in Syria with the knowledge of Saudi intelligence chief, Prince Bandar bin Sultan.
