Rawalpindi Police gear up for Muharram

Police in the garrison city are gearing up for Muharram. In a meeting held on Wednesday, Regional Police Officer (RPO) Mohammad Wisal Fakhr Sultan Raja ordered the strict implementation of a ban on the use of loudspeakers in mosques and madressahs, distribution of hate material and wall-chalking provoking sectarian trouble.

He was chairing a police officers’ meeting, which outlined a security plan for Muharram.

Besides other senior police officers, City Police Officer Israr Ahmed Abbasi was also present. The RPO directed officers to ensure that the Muharram procession routes were free of trouble-makers.

Furthermore, he also ordered collection of data of the residents and shopkeepers falling on the procession routes.

Police officers were directed to involve notables of the area, members of peace committees in security management.

He also directed the police to strictly impose government ban on display of arms and also ensure that no firebrand gives hate speeches.

The RPO also asked the organizers of Muharram related events to make themselves the security of their ulams and Zakirs.

Police claimed to have arrested several people since the government ban on use of loudspeaker and distribution of hate material and wall-chalking and produced them in the court of law.

The Punjab home department had already directed the police to prepare a security plan in consultation with Shias and all other stakeholders to avert any sectarian unrest.

The provincial authorities had also asked the police to keep a check on Afghan trained boys and other individuals who had been placed on 4th schedule at ATA.

Besides, the police and district administration have been advised to ensure the availability of beds in government hospitals and ambulances in operative condition to deal with any emergency during Muharram.
