Opposition Calls to Release Political Prisoners, Rida al-Ghasra Sentenced to 41

bahraiPolitical and legal figures called on the Bahraini regime to release political prisoners, expressing solidarity with the detainee Rida al-Ghasra, who faces a sentence of 41 years in jail so far, according to his attorney Rim Khalaf.

During a solidarity session held in the Bahraini opposition “al-Wefaq Association” headquarters, an official in “al-Wefaq” Hadi al-Moussawi stated, “If Rida al-Ghasra’s pictures of him lying on the ground were circulated publically, then what could happen inside closed cells? Many men lost their jobs, stability, and families because of arrests. Rida was apprehended on Friday, and his fate remained unknown for 48 hours, until his family called an international organization to follow through his case, because security authorities wouldn’t reveal his fate.”

Moreover, al-Moussawi pointed out, “There is an official revenge against any opposition, whether a politician or a field activist.”

For her part, attorney Rim Khalaf said, “Rida al-Ghasra is supposed to live a normal life, and a young man only 25 years-old shouldn’t be sentenced to 41 years in prison with other lawsuits pending.”

“When I defend Rida, I defend a citizen’s right, no matter his previous sentences. I believe that when pictures and video footage of people are circulated before being prosecuted is an indication that he was convicted even before defending himself and denying charges filed against him,” she added.
