Iraqi Government Authorizes 40 Iranian Flights from Najaf International Airport

Shiite News: The Iraqi government has announced that Iranian airlines other than Mahan Air have been granted permission to operate 40 flights to and from Najaf International Airport. According to a statement issued by the Iraqi government, the special authorization has been granted to facilitate the movement of pilgrims and passengers traveling to and from Iraq and to support humanitarian and medical needs.

According to the statement, the Iraqi prime minister thanked the United States for its cooperation in granting the required authorization and for its positive response. The Iraqi Prime Minister’s Office emphasized that Iraq remains committed to developing its diplomatic relations on the basis of national interests and balanced and positive relations with other countries.

It is noteworthy that the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) had previously announced that passenger flights between Iran and Iraq could resume under a limited authorization, provided that the flights depart from Najaf International Airport and return to the same airport.
