Maulana Fazlur Rehman Criticized Over Remarks on Imam Hussain’s Mourning, Shia Community Calls Comments Offensive

Shiite News: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who has already faced public criticism over previous controversial statements, is now facing backlash after making remarks about the mourning rituals held in remembrance of Imam Hussain (AS). Critics say his comments mocked a deeply respected religious practice and offended the religious sentiments of Shia Muslims.

According to reports, Maulana Fazlur Rehman made the remarks while addressing a lawyers’ convention in Islamabad. During his speech, he narrated an anecdote in a humorous manner about the mourning ceremonies observed during the month of Muharram, which many members of the Shia community viewed as disrespectful toward their religious beliefs and rituals.

In the anecdote, he described a fictional foreign visitor who witnessed people participating in mourning rituals and asked why they were striking themselves. After being told that they were mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the visitor allegedly replied that if the martyrdom had occurred 1,400 years ago, the mourners must have received the news very late. The remark was followed by laughter from the audience.

The comments have drawn criticism from members of the Shia community, who argue that mourning Imam Hussain (AS) is a central religious tradition rooted in remembrance, sacrifice, and faith, and that mocking such practices is deeply offensive.
