PEMRA banned media coverage of 72 banned organizations

PEMRA directed all television channels and radio stations to immediately stop the coverage of 72 banned organizations including Lashkar e Tayyaba, Jamat ud Dawa’t and Falah Insaniyat. The notice issued on Monday is two pages long and also had the list of banned organizations. Officials also banned the channels from on airing advertisements for the funding of banned groups. A survey of NAP, positions of banned organizations and financial support of terrorists were mentioned in the topic of the notice issued by PEMRA.

Two days after the 26th October’s earthquake the Information Minister of Pakistan had said that no banned organization would be allowed to work and spread their ideology in name of relief works. He also said “That time had passed in Pakistan. As a result of Zarb e Azb such organizations lost their foothold and the government perform all its works through governmental institutions”.

In seven points of the PEMRA notice organizations, which had been declared banned by the UN’s Security Council, which were especially mentioned include Lashkar e Tayyaba, Jama’at ud Dawa’t and Falah Insaniyat. Officials said that according to section 27 of PEMRA’s amendment ordinance 2007 telecasting or repeat telecasting a program that promotes hatred or threatened to destroy peace, is prohibited.

Section 3 of Electronic Media Code of Conduct 2015was also referred to in the notice according to which the license holders need to make it sure that no such material is telecasted that incite people for violence, help it, preach it or present it as something good. PEMRA officials also said that the channels which does not abide by the rules would have to pay fine or even face the cancellation of license.
