Every flood a stark reminder of Pakistan’s incompetence, Says Senator Nasir Abbas
Shiite News: Chairman of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) Pakistan, Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas Jafri, has said that despite 78 years of Pakistan’s existence, the nation still stands helpless in the face of recurring floods. “Each flood displaces millions, destroys crops, devastates infrastructure, and delivers a severe blow to the economy. Yet, we limit ourselves to temporary sympathy and await the next disaster,” he lamented.
He criticized successive governments for failing to adopt a permanent and serious strategy to deal with natural disasters. “Floods, earthquakes, and climate change repeatedly warn us, but the state institutions responsible remain in deep slumber,” he added.
The MWM Chairman further warned that unchecked deforestation is poisoning the environment. “Trees provide oxygen, stabilize soil, balance rainfall, and reduce the intensity of floods, but we are destroying this natural wealth with our own hands,” he said.
He also expressed regret that Pakistan has failed to raise environmental awareness among its new generations. “Instead of integrating climate change education into schools and universities, we have treated it as an unnecessary debate,” he remarked.
Senator Raja Nasir Abbas called for urgent and practical measures, including:
• An immediate and strict ban on deforestation.
• Declaring tree plantation a national duty and promoting it at every level.
• Incorporating climate change awareness into educational curricula and media.
• Fast-tracking the construction of modern dams, water management systems, and urban planning.
• Establishing and strengthening permanent institutions and rescue systems for disaster management at national and provincial levels.
He warned that if negligence continues, future floods, storms, and famines will push coming generations into darkness. “The time has come for both the government and the people to rise and launch a struggle, not just for temporary relief, but for building a sustainable and safe Pakistan,” he concluded.
