Birth anniversary of Imam Mohammad Baqir being celebrated today (the 1st of Rajab) in Pakistan.

Shia Muslims revere and adore Imam Baqir (AS) as the 5th infallible Imam from the family of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Special events mark the birth anniversary of Imam Baqir across the world on the first day of sacred month of Rajab.

Notably, Muslims follow Islamic lunar calendar; therefore, they observe Islamic events as per lunar calendar.

Imam Baqir became the Imam in 713 A.D. after martyrdom of his father, Imam Ali (aka Imam Sajjad) (AS).

The fifth infallible Imam also had the responsibility of leading the Shia Muslims until his martyrdom in 735.

He made a great scientific movement that reached its peak during the time of his son Imam Jafar al-Sadiq (AS).

Imam Baqir’s narrations in religion and regarding the conduct of the Prophet (PBUH), Quranic sciences, moral conduct, and manner surpass from the narrations of other Imams from Ahle Bayt (AS).

Shia Muslims witnessed intensified progress in different scholarly fields, including ethics, jurisprudence, theology, exegesis, etc.

Prior to that, Umayyad despotic tyranny had gagged scholarly debate and discussion.

However, teachings of Imam al-Baqir came to surface because that era witnessed intellectual life of the Muslim community.

Meanwhile, historians noted crucial times for the foundation of studies connected with the Qur’an during the late first century and early 2nd century of Islam.

During that era, much of the discussion took place in Medina, the center of religious learning since the time of the Prophet.

Imam Mohammad Baqir (AS) spent his life in the holy city of Madinah. He paid particular attention to hadiths (or traditions) from the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to the extent that Jabir b. Yazid al-Ju’fi narrated 70,000 traditions from the noble Prophet (PBUH) from him.

But it had made many, including Umayyad tyrant Hisham ibn Abdul Malik unhappy.

The progress the 5th infallible Imam’s work was making in reaching out to the people of not only Madinah but throughout the Muslim lands.

It angered the Umayyad dynastic despot because that spiritual influence would change into political influence.

He believed Imam Baqir’s scholarly and spiritual influence could jeopardize the Umayyad dynastic ruler’s position as head of the state.

The more the Umayyad Government learned about Imam’s prestige and popularity, the more intolerable his existence became.

Finally, he ordered to poison Imam Baqir and due to that Imam Baqir passed away at the age of 57 years.
