Ayatollah Sistani condemned the violence, urging people to stay calm

Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Sistani condemned the violence during Iraq’s protests, urging all sides to take steps towards establishing peace and calmness in the country.

In a statement on Friday which was read by his official representative Ahmad al-Safi, the prominent Shiite cleric Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali al-Sistani condemned the violence during Iraq’s protests, urging people to stay calm.

He also urged the Iraqi government to take practical steps to fight against corruption and create new jobs.

Iraq’s top Shia cleric criticized the Iraqi government and political forces for ignoring people’s demands.

Ayatollah al-Sistani also stressed that the ruling parties must change the way they deal with Iraq’s problems.

He described the deaths and destruction of Iraq’s unrest as ‘sorrowful’.

In the latest development, Iraqi sources announced on Friday that with the presence of security forces Baghdad streets got empty of protesters and the situation turned to be normal.
