Imam Khamenei Pardons Hundreds of Iranian Convicts

iran rahberSupreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Grand Ayatollah Imam  Seyed Ali Khamenei pardoned or commuted prison terms of a large number of convicts found guilty by various Iranian courts.

Ayatollah Khamenei on Monday granted amnesty for 920 convicts on the occasion of the Islamic Republic Day, which is annually celebrated in Iran on Farvardin 12 (April 1 this year).

The pardon was granted at the request of Judiciary Chief Ayatollah Sadeq Amoli Larijani.
Article 110 of the Constitution grants the Supreme Leader the right to pardon or reduce the sentences of convicts upon a recommendation from the head of the Judiciary.

The clemency, however, does not apply to all types of convicts, including those who have been sentenced for their role in armed struggle against the country, armed or organized drug trafficking, rape, armed robbery, arms smuggling, abduction, bribery and embezzlement.
Iranians are prepared to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Islamic Republic establishment tomorrow.

In a two-day referendum held on March 30-31 after the 1979 victory of the Islamic Revolution, over 98.2 percent of the Iranians voted “yes” to the establishment of an Islamic Republic.
