Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev says his country will not be used as a military base for Israel and the US in any potential attack against Iran.
Should Israel and the US attack Iran, the Azeri Republic will stay impartial in the conflict and will not allow its soil to be used against Iran, he said, Mehr News Agency reported.
The official also expressed opposition to any adventurism against Iran, asking for a diplomatic resolution of the Western dispute over Iran’s nuclear energy program.
The US and Israel have repeatedly threatened to take military action against Iran in order to force the Islamic Republic to halt its uranium enrichment program, which Washington and Tel Aviv falsely claim includes non-civilian components.
Iran rejects the allegation, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran’s nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence showing that the Islamic Republic’s civilian nuclear program has been diverted to non-civilian purposes.
