Bahrain’s Shiite worshipers ordered to halt congregational prayers at demolished mosques

Bahrain’s Shiite worshipers have reportedly been instructed by authorities not to pray at the sites of demolished Shiite mosques.

The country’s opposition Al-Wefaq movement said in a statement on Sunday that a number of people were summoned by police and ordered to sign a pledge not to organize congregational prayers at the aforementioned locations.

According to Al-Wefaq, the latest threat of punitive measures by authorities is also designed to obstruct calls for the reconstruction of the mosques.

Bahraini authorities bulldozed at least 30 Shiite religious sites over a two-month period at the height of anti-regime protests in 2011.

Since then, Shiite worshipers have regularly gathered to hold small group prayers at those sites.
