UN Special Envoy calls for release of Yemeni prisoners

The UN Special Envoy for Yemeni Affairs called on all parties involved in the country to release all Yemeni prisoners because of the danger of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Martin Griffiths said on Friday, as the world is struggling with the Coronavirus pandemic, the parties involved in Yemen’s war focus on avoiding jeopardizing civilians’ lives.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemeni Affairs once again called on Yemeni parties to stop clashes in the two provinces of al-Jawf and Marib to prevent conflict escalation.

A new round of talks on war prisoners is scheduled for the 23rd of this March in Jordan if coronavirus allows.

Yemen’s five-year conflict has killed more than 100,000 and unleashed a humanitarian crisis.

Nearly 80 percent of the population live off humanitarian aid while millions are on the brink of starvation, leaving them highly vulnerable to the disease.
