Russia foils terrorist plot by Daesh

Russia’s main intelligence agency has killed a member of the Daesh terrorist group who plotted a terrorist attack in the country on the presidential election day next month.

The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) said in a statement on Thursday that it had “neutralized” the terrorist in the northwestern Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.

“Russia’s FSB suppressed the activity of a member of the international terrorist organization ISIL, who was preparing a terrorist attack in Nizhny Novgorod,” the agency said, using an English acronym for Daesh. “The criminal, who put up armed resistance before arrest, was neutralized by special units of Russia’s FSB.”

“According to the intelligence collected, the terrorist — a citizen of a neighboring state — was preparing the attack on the day of [the] Russian presidential election,” it added.

An improvised explosive device, firearms, ammunition, and bomb-making components were seized from the terrorist after the raid on his location, according to the statement.

The FSB said in December last year that it had foiled terrorist plots targeting New Year’s festivities and presidential election events in Russia.

The 2018 Russian presidential election is scheduled to take place on March 18.

Russia has seen terrorist attacks by Daesh before.

The country began an aerial bombardment campaign against extremist outfits in Syria in late 2015, when the Syrian government submitted an official request. That campaign has helped significantly suppress extremist groups in the Arab country.
