Federal agent shoots man in Minneapolis during immigration raid

A federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot an immigrant in the leg during an enforcement operation in north Minneapolis, intensifying unrest in a city still reeling from the recent killing of Renee Nicole Good by a federal agent.

The incident took place around 7 pm local time, according to witnesses. Hundreds of protesters gathered at the scene on Wednesday evening, confronting federal agents who had cordoned off the area and deployed smoke and other crowd control measures.

At a press conference held at Minneapolis City Hall, Police Chief Brian O’Hara accused demonstrators of “engaging in unlawful behavior” and called on them to disperse. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey criticized ICE, stating, “I’ve seen conduct from ICE that is disgusting and intolerable,” while also urging demonstrators to return home. “We cannot counter Donald Trump’s chaos with more chaos … Anyone who is taking the bait tonight, stop,” he said. “You are not helping the undocumented immigrants in our city.”

Legal and mutual aid networks reported that a pregnant woman may have been unable to access medical assistance during the raid. O’Hara stated he could not confirm any injuries but acknowledged that emergency responders had received a call from a woman in the building’s basement experiencing an “anxiety attack.”
City officials respond as clashes escalate
The city of Minneapolis later released a statement confirming a man had been shot and transferred to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting, first reported by the Minnesota Star Tribune, comes as the city faces continued fallout from the killing of Good on January 7 by a US ICE agent.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was asked for comment by The Guardian, but failed to immediately respond to the request. In a statement posted on X, the agency said, “At 6:50 PM CT, federal law enforcement officers were conducting a targeted traffic stop in Minneapolis of an illegal alien from Venezuela.” DHS claimed the individual resisted and attacked the officer, and that two others emerged from a nearby apartment and also attacked the agent, prompting the officer to “fire a defensive shot to defend his life.”
The claims have not been independently verified by The Guardian. Last week, following Good’s death, DHS asserted that she had attacked an agent, a claim seemingly contradicted by video footage showing her driving away at the time of the shooting.

Massive immigration operation reshapes daily life in Minnesota
According to federal officials, approximately 3,000 immigration officers are active in Minnesota or en route, marking what the Trump administration describes as the largest operation in DHS history.

This sweeping federal action has significantly impacted daily life in the region. Community groups have mobilized to monitor the presence of immigration officers, observe arrests, offer legal aid, deliver supplies, and assist families afraid to leave their homes. Volunteer networks have also helped transport children to and from school.

Protests have erupted across the United States, criticizing the administration’s immigration enforcement practices. In response, federal officers have used aggressive crowd control tactics, including teargas, pepper balls, and stun grenades.

Officials have defended these actions, citing federal immunity protections.

Tensions in Minneapolis remain high. On Wednesday, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz urged residents to document alleged misconduct by federal agents. “Armed, masked, undertrained ICE agents are going door-to-door, ordering people to point out where their neighbors of color live,” he said. “It’s a campaign of organized brutality against the people of Minnesota by our own federal government.”

He called on citizens to “carry your phone with you at all times” and to help “establish a record of exactly what’s happening in our communities.” Walz concluded by declaring: “Accountability is coming, in the voting booth and in court.”
