Russian official says Western countries obstruct anti-terror fight in Syria

Russia’s top security official says Western countries are obstructing the fight against terrorism in Syria and use it as a tool in an attempt to impose their hegemony on the region.

Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia’s National Security Council, made the remarks during a speech at the 9th Moscow Conference on International Security on Thursday.

Patrushev reaffirmed his country’s continued support for Syria in the fight against terrorism, saying Russia has fought in cooperation with the Syrian people to defeat terrorism in the interest of not only Syria but the entire world.

“It is unfortunate that some Western countries that seek to impose their hegemony on the region did not consider it necessary to work with us against this evil, and even made great efforts to obstruct the fight against it,” Patrushev said.

The official stressed that Moscow would continue to provide support to Syria until the full elimination of terrorism, and would help expedite efforts for the return of the displaced Syrians to their homeland as well as the reconstruction of the war-torn country at all levels.

Speaking at the same conference, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also underlined that Russia would continue to provide support to Syria in combating terrorism and resolving the crisis in the Arab country.

“We offered support to Syria in its war against terrorism and we will continue to support it until eliminating it completely and reaching a political solution to the crisis in it,” Lavrov said.

Syria has been gripped by foreign-backed militancy since 2011.

The United States has over the past years been leading a military coalition conducting airstrikes against purported targets of the Daesh terrorist group inside Syria without any authorization from the Damascus government or a United Nations mandate.

The military alliance has repeatedly been accused of targeting Syrian infrastructure and killing civilians. It has also been largely incapable of fulfilling its declared aim of destroying Daesh.

Moreover, the US has imposed crippling sanctions on Damascus, with the Syrian government denouncing the unilateral sanctions as “crimes against humanity,” and saying the Western sponsors of terrorism must pay the price for their atrocities against the Syrian nation.
