Germany Decides to Export Arms to Saudi Arabia, Ban Overruled

A German court overturned an effective ban on exports of armored vehicles to Saudi Arabia imposed by the government following the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

An administrative court in Frankfurt said that the export control authority of the German government failed to meet official requirements when it withdrew a permit to export 110 armored vehicles to Saudi ground forces, according to Reuters.

The court did not specify on Tuesday the company that filed the case and said the verdict was no longer final and could still be appealed. The Ministry of Economy, which oversees the Office of Export Control, was not immediately available for comment.

The government last November halted all German arms exports to Saudi Arabia, including deals for which permits were issued, following the murder of a Saudi journalist critical of the kingdom at his country’s consulate in Istanbul. The value of these deals is estimated at 1.5 billion euros.
