plf22A Palestinian resistance group has announced that it is forming combat units to try to liberate the territories occupied by the Israeli regime, particularly the Golan Heights.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine’s General Command (PFLP-GC) said on Friday that it was preparing for new operations after being idle for almost 40 years.

The resistance group was most active in the 1970s and 80s and has much influence with Palestinians in Lebanon and Syria.

“The leadership of the PFLP-GC announces that it will form brigades to work on liberating all violated (Israeli-occupied) territories, first and foremost the occupied Golan,” the group said in a statement.

“The Popular Front’s leaders have opened the door to all Syrian citizens to volunteer in the formation of the resistance,” it added.

Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967, when it also took control of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

It annexed the Golan Heights in 1981, although the move was never recognized by the international community and was a violation of international law.

The move came after Damascus said it would open its border to any group wishing to fight the Israeli regime from the Golan Heights. The Syrian call was made after Israeli warplanes attacked the Syrian capital, Damascus twice in 48 hours, killing several people.

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has sent letters to the UN Security Council stating that Israel’s aggression shows the links between Tel Aviv and terrorist groups operating in Syria, including the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra Front.
