4,750 detainees in Israeli jails, including 198 kids
The Palestinian ministry of prisoners’ affairs said the number of prisoners detained in Israeli jails rose at the end of January to 4,750 detainees, including 198 minors and children.
According to a report released by its statistics department, the majority of the prisoners, 82.5 percent, are from the West Bank, while 9.6 percent of them are from the Gaza Strip, and the rest are from Jerusalem and the 1948 occupied territories. All of them are held in about 17 detention centers and prisons.
The report stated that there are 186 Palestinians detained administratively without any charges or trials. It said that 12 women are still held in Israeli jails, the oldest of them is Lina Jerboni who has been in jail for 11 years.
Among the prisoners as well, there are 12 Palestinian lawmakers, three former ministers and dozens of teachers and political figures.
The report pointed out that the number of patients in Israeli jails increased to 1,400 prisoners, many of them suffer from serious health problems.
