Israel carried out war crimes in Gaza: Amnesty

Human rights monitor Amnesty International says the Israeli regime committed war crimes during the latest war on the besieged Gaza Strip.

The group said on Tuesday that the demolition of four multi-story buildings during the 50-day offensive was in violation of international humanitarian law.

“All the evidence we have shows this large-scale destruction was carried out deliberately and with no military justification,” said Philip Luther, director of Amnesty International’s Middle East and North Africa program.

Based on the facts on the ground and statements made by Israeli army spokespersons, the assaults were designed to destroy Gaza people’s “already precarious livelihoods,” he added.

“War crimes must be independently and impartially investigated and those responsible should be brought to justice in fair trials,” Luther pointed out.

According to the rights group, one of the landmark buildings razed in the Israeli attacks was the Municipal Commercial Center in the city of Rafah. It contained a shopping mall, a medical clinic and offices, and was the source of income for hundreds of families.

Amnesty wants to be allowed access to Gaza and also calls for a UN inquiry into the war, a request which Israel has so far refused.

Israel started pounding the blockaded enclave in early July, inflicting heavy losses on the Palestinian land. Over 2,140 Palestinians, including a large number of women, children, and the elderly, were killed in the 50 days of the Israeli onslaught on Gaza. Around 11,000 others were injured.

The war ended on August 26 with an Egyptian-brokered truce, which took effect after negotiations in the Egyptian capital Cairo.
