Putin, Abbas discuss Middle East settlement on the phone

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the latest Middle East developments including Tel Aviv’s plan to occupy the West Bank, in a phone conversation with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Wednesday.

The Kremlin said in a statement that Putin reaffirmed Russia’s support to a just and lasting solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict within the existing international legal framework, emphasizing the importance of strengthening intra-Palestinian unity.

Putin and Abbas also discussed the Russian-Palestinian cooperation, taking into account the agreements reached Bethlehem in January, it said.

The two sides agreed to continue working together in their fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

Netanyahu had planned to annex parts of the West Bank since July 1 but postponed it due to widespread global opposition.

The annexation of parts of the West Bank to the Israeli-occupied territories is one of the clauses of the anti-Palestinian so-called ‘Deal of the Century’, which US President Donald Trump unveiled on January 28, 2020.
