Chief Census Commissioner says no to inquire about sectarian identity

Chief Census Commissioner and Chief Statistician of Pakistan Asif Bajwa, has said that there is no policy to inquire about sectarian identity of Pakistani citizens during ongoing Census and he will probe if someone inquires about that.

He gave this assurance to the deputy secretary general of the Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Nasir Abbas Shirazi who apprised him of the complaints that Shia Muslims of parts of Karachi were being asked to disclose their sectarian identity despite the fact that census form doesn’t require this information.
Bajwa said that no staffer of the Census has been issued such directives and if someone asks that question, he will hold inquiry against them. He said that people should free to lodge their complaints with the Census department at its toll free number: 080057574.
