Section 144 Imposed Across Punjab During Muharram; Seven Major Restrictions Announced

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, Section 144 will remain in force across Punjab from June 17 to June 26. Under the order, seven key restrictions have been imposed to maintain law and order during Muharram.

The restrictions include:

  1. Only officially approved processions and religious gatherings (majalis) will be permitted during Muharram.
  2. The display of all types of weapons and flammable materials in public places has been prohibited.
  3. Provocative slogans, gestures, statements, or comments that may inflame public sentiments, religious beliefs, sectarian differences, or ethnic hatred will be banned.
  4. The construction of defensive positions or barricades on rooftops of houses and buildings located along procession routes will not be allowed.
  5. Storing stones, bricks, bottles, garbage, or similar materials on rooftops of buildings located along procession routes has been prohibited.
  6. Spectators will not be allowed to gather on rooftops or shop fronts located along procession routes during processions.
  7. A ban on pillion riding (double riding) has been imposed, except for senior citizens, women, and law enforcement personnel.

According to the notification, all restrictions except the ban on pillion riding will remain in effect from 1st to 10th Muharram 1448 AH. The pillion riding ban will apply only on the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

Authorities stated that these measures are aimed at ensuring peace, security, public order, and the safety of mourners during the sacred days of Muharram.
