US Decides to Permanently Close Peshawar Consulate After Violent Protests
Shiite News: Following violent protests targeting US diplomatic missions in Pakistan, the United States has decided to permanently close its consulate in Peshawar.
According to reports, protesters had threatened damage to American interests in the country. During the unrest, at least 40 protesters were reportedly killed while more than 50 people were arrested.
In the aftermath of the protests and diplomatic tensions, security has been placed on high alert across Pakistan. Citizens are expressing serious concerns, and international attention has turned toward the situation in the country.
The US State Department has formally notified Congress of its intention to permanently shut down the consulate in Peshawar, which had been one of Washington’s most significant diplomatic facilities near the Afghan border.
The consulate played an important role in logistical and operational coordination before, during, and after the US invasion of Afghanistan in 2001.
According to the notification, the Peshawar consulate currently employs 18 American diplomats and other officials, along with 89 local staff members.
The closure process is expected to cost approximately $3 million, including about $1.8 million for the relocation of armored trailers currently being used as temporary office facilities.
