Shiite News: Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Asim Iftikhar, briefed the UN Security Council during its session on the Middle East and the Question of Palestine, shedding light on the catastrophic situation in Gaza and reiterating Pakistan’s principled stance on a just two-state solution.
He thanked Mr. Ramiz Alakbarov, UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, for his comprehensive briefing and said that for nearly two years, the world has witnessed—with horror and disbelief—a devastating war unleashed on Gaza. He noted that the besieged Palestinian population has endured relentless bombardment, starvation and unimaginable suffering.
Over 70,000 Palestinians have been martyred, the majority women and children, while the entire social and economic fabric of Gaza lies in ruins. Calls for ceasefire were consistently ignored, and demands for accountability were met with complete impunity.
Despite this grim reality, Ambassador Iftikhar highlighted two major political developments:
1. The High-Level Conference held in July to advance the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue and implementation of the two-state solution.
2. The subsequent New York Declaration adopted on 12 September, followed by the 22 September decision to reconvene the conference.
The declaration reaffirmed a firm commitment to irreversible, time-bound steps toward establishing an independent State of Palestine, reflecting the overwhelming desire of the international community.
