Anjuman-e-Imamia Voices Alarm Over Militant Activity in Gilgit

Shiite News: An emergency meeting of Anjuman-e-Imamia Gilgit expressed grave concern over the recent troubling activities of extremist elements following an internal incident at Karakoram International University (KIU).
Participants stated that although the dispute took place within university premises and was resolved peacefully, certain militant and takfiri elements used it as a pretext to destabilize peace in Gilgit city.
The meeting condemned the deliberate attempt to shut down the city, raise provocative slogans, block roads and cause distress to commuters.
Such actions were termed unlawful, inflammatory and a serious threat to public order, constituting a systematic attempt to disrupt regional peace.
The participants expressed alarm that despite a peaceful resolution of the students’ dispute, armed individuals entered KIU in suspicious vehicles, spreading fear, chanting sectarian slogans and escalating tensions.
Although negotiations with the university and district administration concluded with the agreement to arrest the armed miscreants and seize the suspected vehicles, the perpetrators were intentionally allowed to escape through a back gate, a clear violation of commitments.
The meeting demanded immediate identification of the armed individuals through CCTV footage, their arrest, and legal action against the vehicles used in the incident.
Participants strongly condemned Allama Qazi Nisar of Ahl-e-Sunnat wal-Jamaat for appearing in combat attire and inciting extremist groups, calling him a serious threat to peace in Gilgit-Baltistan.
They also expressed disappointment that offensive material against Shia sacred personalities continues to circulate on social media, yet no arrests have been made.
The meeting stressed that the Shia community’s commitment to peace is longstanding, but peace requires justice, rule of law and equal enforcement.
If authorities fail to fulfill their responsibilities, the resulting deterioration will be the responsibility of those promoting unrest as well as state institutions whose silence is empowering them.
