Shiite News: The Punjab government’s decision to allocate a monthly stipend of PKR 15,000 to 25,000 from the Bait-ul-Mal for Ulama and prayer leaders has stirred debate in religious circles.
Majlis Ulama Maktab Ahl-e-Bayt Pakistan expressed strong reservations regarding this government measure, stating that although the social status of Ulama is very high, the conditions and regulations attached to this stipend appear to be ill-intentioned.
The statement referenced the Quranic verse: “And let there be among you a group who call to good…”, highlighting that enjoining good and forbidding evil is an obligation upon Muslims, and the Hadith describes raising one’s voice against the ruler’s wrongs as Afzal al-Jihad (the highest form of struggle).
The Majlis warned that the government’s financial stipend could practically function as a means of “silencing the Ulama,” which is unacceptable under any circumstances.
Furthermore, the statement emphasized that Ulama rely on Allah as the ultimate provider, not the ruler, citing: “Allah is the best of providers.”
This communiqué was officially issued by Majlis Ulama Maktab Ahl-e-Bayt Pakistan.
