Shiite News: Following Zohran Mamdani’s historic election as the Mayor of New York, extremist takfiri clerics in Pakistan and on social media launched a wave of sectarian criticism.
Mufti Tariq Masood had earlier congratulated Mamdani on Twitter, writing, “A Muslim has become the mayor.” In response, Takfiri Nasbi cleric Mufti Abu Muhammad of the banned Sipah-e-Sahaba reacted harshly, asking, “Since when did the Ithna Asharis become Muslims?” a statement widely condemned as an open act of takfir (excommunication) against Shia Muslims worldwide.
Mufti Fazl Hamdard, responding to the controversy, took a clear and principled stance, stating that such takfiri attitudes create division within the Muslim Ummah and weaken the strength of Islam from within.
He emphasized that while some individuals blame external forces for the problems facing the Muslim world, the real danger comes from within, from religious groups that spread hatred and discord among Muslims.
He added that when such clerics are called “takfiri,” they become agitated and defensive, yet they continue to excommunicate others.
Mufti Hamdard noted that Sunni youth across Pakistan are increasingly recognizing the deceit and sectarian propaganda of these extremist elements.
