Azadar (mourners) took out sacred mourning processions of 8th Muharram almost in all major cities, towns and villages.

Shia Muslims host and organize these processions and congregations in commemoration of the battle of Karbala in which army of Umayyad dynastic tyranny had massacred Imam Hussain-led companions and family members in 61st year of Islamic Hijrah lunar calendar.

Umayyad despot Yazid son of Muavia had become ruler of the Muslims because his father Muavia had appointed him as his successor despite stiff opposition from eminent Muslim leaders and notables of the time.

World people revere Imam Hussain-led martyrs of Karbala and their oppressed family members due to their unwavering valour and steadfastness against the tyrant and despotic Umayyad monarchy.

Imam Hussain-led great martyrs struggle, resistance and steadfastness remain role model and source of inspiration for oppressed humanity.

Hence, oppressed humanity adores and revers Imam Hussain-led martyrs of Karbala.

Shia Muslims in particular and others in general, commemorate the Martyrs of Karbala during first ten day of Muharram.
They also hold joint and separate programmes to pay homage to Imam Hussain (AS), his family and his companions.

They highlight the sacrifices of Hazrat Abbas Alamdar, the flag-bearing commander of Imam Hussain (AS) in Karbala on 8th Muharram every year.
