Although Pakistani media reported three soldiers embraced martyrdom in that attack, Al Jazeera reported at least eight soldiers killed and five wounded.

Interestingly, both quoted the country’s military as their source.

Al Jazeera report had it that the unidentified gunmen targeted three vehicles in the Gichak area, about 400km south of the Balochistan provincial capital Quetta.

It cited a brief statement from the military said so.

Geo quoted a statement from the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). That said the security forces were patrolling near Gichak valley in the Panjgur district of Balochistan.

Pakistani forces have been fighting an ethnic Baloch armed separatist movement in the region for more than a decade.

Armed separatist groups have waged a guerilla campaign in Balochistan, the country’s largest but least populated province, for years.

Mostly, they targeted security forces, government installations and projects associated with the $60bn China-Pakistan Economic Corridor.

On June 29, four Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) gunmen stormed the country’s main stock exchange in Karachi.

That attack left three private security guards and a policeman dead.

Violence by Baloch armed groups has increased in the last year, with security forces among targets.
