He said the new challenges such as the global pandemics, climate change, pollution and infest of locusts require timely and collective response.

He further said that food security means state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable nutrient food.

Moreover, Ambassador Hosseini cited UN’s related reports that noted food security has declined dramatically in many developing countries

He said these days there are many reasons for deficiency of food security, inter alia, swarm of desert locusts, lack of water for agriculture and rapidly growing population.

Therefore, Syed Hosseini noted what immensely engaged countries such as Iran and Pakistan in recent years includes the challenges such as locusts from different sides that threatens food supply for millions of people in the two countries.

The envoy referred to infestations of locusts along the India-Pakistan border due to which southern Iran had also come under that spell in winter.

He also noted the unusually warm and wet winter allowed an extra generation of breeding. So, he said, it means that the Desert Locust infestations will remain much larger than normal and poses a major risk for the region.

Hence, he called for enhanced cooperation between Pakistan and Iran on food security through defeating locust challenge.
