America is blocking Syria’s return to the Arab League: Russia

The Russian Special Envoy for Syria said in Nur-Sultan on Friday that the Arab League countries have not reinstated Syria because of pressure from the United States.

Alexander Lavrentiev was speaking on the side-lines of the intra-Syrian peace talks in the Kazakh capital when he said the issue was raised during the recent summit of Arab League states in Tunisia in March.

Lavrentiev said that “unfortunately under the U.S. pressure, it is not the secret anymore, it is the fait accompli. Basically, the Arab countries decided not to focus on this issue, the issue of reinstatement.”

“We look at how this distinguished organisation works. It stalls. It happens because there are divisions in the League of the Arab countries, different view on the issues concerning the reinstatement of Syria, its membership in the Arab League countries,” he said.

In addition to blocking Syria’s reinstatement in the Arab League, the U.S. has also severely sanctioned the Levantine country, blocking much needed fuel from reaching millions of people across the country.
