Real pressure must be exerted on terror backers: Syria’s Assad

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad says “real pressure” must be exerted on supporters of terrorists, urging “serious efforts” to eradicate terrorism.

“The defeat of terrorism…requires…applying real pressure on those implicated in financing, arming and facilitating the actions of the terrorists,” Assad told a Russian parliamentary delegation on Sunday.

The Syrian president added that he is grateful for Russia’s constant support for his country.

Russia has been a staunch ally of the government of President Assad throughout the Arab country’s conflict.

Assad’s remarks come as a high-level Syrian delegation plans to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss a possible relaunch of peace talks with foreign-backed opposition.

Syria has been gripped by deadly violence since 2011. According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Zeid al-Hussein, more than 200,000 people have died in the Syrian conflict since March 2011.

The US and its regional allies – especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey – have been supporting the militants operating inside Syria for more than three years.

The ISIL terrorists control large areas of Syria and Iraq. The group sent its militants into Iraq in June, seizing large parts of land along the border between the two countries.

The militants have committed terrible atrocities in Syria and Iraq, including mass executions and beheadings of local residents as well as foreign nationals.

A US-led coalition has been conducting airstrikes on ISIL positions in Iraq and Syria, but the air raids have so far failed to dislodge the terrorists.
